what is “computer music”?

I just watched this excellent TED talk by GE Wang, on one possible future for music. I had heard of both the Ocarina iPhone app, and the Stanford Laptop Orchestra, but this enlightening talk showed many of the possible benefits from this technology. If you have 20 minutes, it is worth a listen!

a quiet night

It has been an eventful couple of weeks. With teaching as my day gig, the summers offer a wealth of possibility. Last week I was in the recording studio tracking for my as-yet-unnamed sophomore album as a leader. The session went great! I am working on a separate post to fill you all in.

However, the time has come to embrace my summer adventures. Friday afternoon I head off to New Jersey for the wedding of a good friend. On Sunday, I head south for a summer in Baltimore. While there, I plan to edit the album, write some new tunes, meet some new musicians, and grow into a new chapter in my life. I am very excited about it all!

But tonight, I am enjoying a quiet, contemplative evening in front of a backyard fire. I will certainly miss this aspect of my country cottage, though I think I will find Baltimore relaxing in its own right.

I had the good fortune to have a rehearsal with the trio on Wednesday. The tunes are shaping up, and we are ready for our session in a little over a week. Bring on the studio!
