swimming, yippee!!

tp:  Today was a two part day.

part 1- swimming
We went to Hamilton Pool, a local swimming hole.  It was very similar to things like The Basin in New Hampshire, except for Texas-sized and much warmer.  Aaron, Evan, and I spent the day swimming, floating, and relaxing on the gravel beach.  The water was a perfect temperature.  It was a great counterpart to the 100° air temperature.

part 2- music
ef: wow, kewl timez! what an austin evening we had. we (aaron libby tim and myself) went to a bar with a $5 fried chicken dinner special and a nice selection of $2 beers. the musical artist was Red Volkart. Frequently voted best guitarist in austin by the local papers, mr.Volkart has the perfect combination of style, texas charm (even though he’s canadian by birth) and ridiculous chops. for the guitar nerds: he’s a tele player and has mastered the art of pre-bends and pedal-steel emulation in the context of his country and blues playing. great use of bending the neck for vibrato and bending harmonics by pushing on the string behind the nut. it was occasionally evident that he is from the “mix-and-match” lick-based school, but he has plenty of his own licks, and executes everything with near-perfection -- and with a great musical sense of humor.
when volkart was done, we headed to the Draught House for their tuesday night special ($2.75 pints of pretty much every beer). this is the kind of place that has so many beers on tap that taps cover the entire length of the bar. There were at least 50 varieties, probably more, and many were home-brews. personally i had already had enough beers, so i opted for one that i could drink slowly, and many glasses of water. we met up with micah again and his friend john from red bank NJ (!) and had a great time shooting the proverbial you-know-what.
then home to libby  and aarons for some of aaron’s homemade blue cheese sourdough bread. excellent.
